Yamaichi

Founded in the late Edo period (1603-1867), Yamaichi is one of the ten oldest shops in Nishiki Market.
“We continue to serve traditional, delicious, seasonal dishes such as our grilled hamo (pike conger eel), which is made by a special cutting technique using high-quality hamo from the Seto Inland Sea and immediately grilling it with our homemade sauce, and our dried codfish rehydrated in the groundwater of Nishiki Market, keeping the flavors of the good old days,” the owner says.

Nandaimon Nishiki branch

This restaurant is a hidden gem, tucked away a bit from the street of Nishiki Market. This is a Japanese beef steak restaurant operated by Nandaimon, a long-established yakiniku restaurant founded over 60 years ago. You can enjoy high-quality wagyu beef in a relaxed Japanese-style atmosphere. Only black wagyu beef is used. In particular, the fillets and sirloins are A5-grade Hirai beef from the Kyoto-Tanba-bokujo farm.

Uchida

“Pickles are alive," the owner says. Uchida opened in Shimabara, Kyoto in 1940. When making Kyoto pickles, carefully selected vegetables are pickled by skilled artisans who adjust the amount of weight and salt according to the season. Uchida employs the traditional way of pickling, hoping that more people will enjoy Kyoto pickles.

Chinami

“Originally, we sold dried foods such as kelp, but my parents started tsukudani (food boiled down in soy sauce and mirin), and we have become a specialty store of kelp and tsukudani,” says the owner of Chinami. “While using high-quality kelp to make traditional products, we are also promoting kelp for a new audience with our creative original tsukudani, represented by our signature product ‘Oyajinakase.’ We strive to maintain a balance between tradition and innovation while always remembering the tradition of kelp-using cuisine.”

SNOOPY Tea House

This store is like a paradise for Snoopy fans. The first floor of the store, converted from an old Kyoto townhouse, sells a variety of Snoopy goods. It has a take-out corner for dorayaki sweet bean paste sandwiches and soft-serve ice cream. Even these are designed with Peanuts characters. The second floor is a restaurant, where of course all the menu items are decorated with Peanuts characters.

Kimura

The variety and quantity of fish lined up in the shop is a sight to behold, which makes it no surprise that this is one of the oldest stores in Nishiki Market, dating back to the Genna era (1615-1624) in the Edo period. Because they purchase fish in large quantities for wholesale to ryotei (traditional Japanese restaurants) and caterers, the retail price to the general public is also very reasonable. You can enjoy at home the same high-quality fish as those served at ryotei and other high-end restaurants.

Kyo nishiki Kanzashi-Ya Wargo

Kyo Nishiki Kanzashiya wargo Neko Mashigura is a select store that carries "Kanzashiya wargo", Japan's number one hairpin specialty store, "Neko Mashigura", a select store featuring selected cat goods, and "musumusu", a simple, minimalistic, and trendy sauna brand from Japan.

Sawawa

You can tell by the color of the shop’s curtains and sign that this store has something to do with green tea. It specializes in matcha green tea sweets, especially on sweets using matcha from Uji. The first floor sells a variety of matcha sweets, and the second floor is a café, which offers a menu that includes warabimochi (bracken starch jelly), parfaits, and anmitsu (a sweet bean paste desert with agar-agar jelly, etc.). They use spring-harvested tea leaves and the grinding is done in a stone mortar right in the store for you to see.

Genzou

Kyoto-style udon noodles, Kyoto-style oden made with the same soup stock, and kushikatsu (skewered pork cutlets) are popular in this relaxed, mid-twentieth-century style space. They propose new dishes while still cherishing Kyoto ingredients such as fried tofu slices, yuba (soy milk skin), raw fu (gluten cake), and Kujo leeks. A wide selection of Kyoto's locally brewed sake is also available. This restaurant is a good place to have a quick drink during the day while satisfying your appetite.
